Pompeo: America ‘safe’ from Russia

Americans shouldn’t worry about Russian nuclear threats, CIA Director Mike Pompeo said on Sunday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently touted what he said were new Russian nuclear weapons, some with unlimited range. But Pompeo said none of it was a surprise to the U.S. intelligence community.

“We are following and tracking all of this closely, as are our brothers at the Department of Defense,” the CIA director said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Americans should rest assured that we have a very good understanding of the Russian program and how to make sure that Americans continue to be kept safe from threats from Vladimir Putin.”

The U.S. remains “fully engaged” in keeping up with the latest weapons threats and technological advances, whatever the source, Pompeo added.

“Each time there’s an advance in anyone’s weapon systems, Russia’s weapon system, China’s weapon system, America is required to make sure that we have defenses that respond to them,” he said. “As technology advances — not only the weapon system he described, but cyberweapons as well — America has a responsibility, and the national security team is fully engaged, in making sure we are prepared to protect from those threats, from whatever regime presents them.”
