Trump Responds to Michelle Obama Saying There Is No Hope Under His Presidency

A paucity of hope in the United States? Not as Donald Trump sees it. And he’s pretty convinced that Michelle Obama didn’t see it that way, either.

In a speech before a victory rally in Mobile, Alabama, over the weekend, Trump said that he believed that the first lady’s statement that “we are feeling what not having hope feels like” was not meant quite the way that her statement was being interpreted.

“Michelle Obama said yesterday that there’s no hope,” Trump said over boos, according to The Daily Caller. “But I assume she was talking about the past not the future, because I’m telling you, we have tremendous hope. And we have tremendous promise and tremendous potential.

“We are going to be so successful as a country again,” he continued. “We are going to be amazing. And I actually think she made that statement not meaning it the way it came out. I really do.

Because I met with President Obama and Michelle Obama in the White House, my wife was there,” he added. “She could not have been nicer. I honestly believe she meant that statement in a different way than it came out because I believe — I believe there is tremendous hope and beyond hope we have such potential.”

“And beyond hope, we have such potential. This country has such potential. You watch, it’s going to be so special. Things are going to happen like you haven’t seen happen in many many decades,” Trump added, according to The Hill. “This is truly an exciting time to be alive. The script is not yet written.”

Trump was responding to a clip from Michelle Obama’s interview with Oprah Winfrey.

“We feel the difference now. See, now, we are feeling what not having hope feels like,” Obama said, according to CNN. “Hope is necessary. It’s a necessary concept and Barack didn’t just talk about hope because he thought it was just a nice slogan to get votes.”

The president-elect’s response was perfect, though — he merely brushed it off and assumed she was talking about something else. After all, a lot of people are feeling hope nowadays — particularly those who have been ignored by the Obama White House for eight years now.
